Roomba by IRobot

I bought a Roomba robot vacuum cleaner last year and recently reviewed IRobot's sweeping robot for the workshop and garage - the Dirt Dog . Start the Roomba or the Dirt Dog and come back in a while to a clean floor or garage. Very cool

Operation couldn't be easier, after you start the Roomba, it criss crosses the room, vacuuming around table legs and under chairs and couches. My Roomba works well on both hard floors and carpets. It has sensors to tell it to spend more time in dirty areas and to keep it from falling down stairs. And if you buy the optional charging station, it when it is done, or its battery is almost dead, it will automatically return to the station to be recharged.

All is not perfect. Lamp cords need to be tied up so that they do not coil on the floor - the Roomba will try to eat the cord. And if you have area rugs with fringe on the ends, it doesn't like those either.

I am a fan of both the Roomba and the Dirt Dog, but I am curious, if you have either one, what is your experience, do you like it? And I am also curious how dogs and cats react to it.

I have similar problems with cords and area rug fringe but it does a nice job. My daughter gave it a name: Edgar, like a valet but my son added a J before the name; you figure it out. It seems a bit like having a pet; you feel compelled to tell the vacuum it is doing a good job.

The cat is terrorized by the regular vacuum. She leaves the room when J Edgar is working but watches from a short distance; fascinated but uncomfortable. It is fun.

I have a roomba and I liked it, but I need a filter for it. It probably needs service, so who do I take the roomba to?

Does anyone have a Scooba? How large an area does it clean before it runs out of cleaning fluid? How good a job does it do? How convenient or inconvenient is it to set up with cleaning fluid and empty, clean, put away, charge, etc,?

Great comments on the Roomba. Thank you.

My Roomba does a great job of cleaning, but often hangs up on any type of throw rug whether it has fringe or not. Also sometimes gets stuck under upholstered furniture such as the ottoman and chair. Seldom returns to the charger before it dies.

My dog definitely keeps her distance when it is operating.

Cynthia: J Edgar - great name! A friend of mine named their Roomba Imelda, its alway trying to eat the laces on shoes left in the room.

Ruthied: Go to http://store.irobot.com or call (800) 727-9077 for parts.

Eli - There are three Scooba models. IRobot claims that the least expensive on will clean 250 sq ft, next one 500 sq ft and the most expensive 750 sq ft. I have not had the opportunity to test one.

I love, very clean, hard surface flooring (Pet P). I schedule my Roomba to operate at night while I'm asleep and in the AM, I have clean floors. I would like to get the Scooba regardless of the maintenance. I clean up my Roomba once or twice a week, but empty and clean the filter after each use. I think one of my son's first words was Roomba. At 12 months he would push the buttons on top until the Roomba started, then he ran for cover.

We have had "Fred" for seven months and like "him". Our Roomba does a great job on the hardwood floors but tends to hang up on the area rugs. With a litle time he will make his rug escape and continue on. Our dogs don't like it but don't seem to be afraid of it, they just avoid it.

We call ours R2D2. One problem I have found is that the Rhoomba does great with dirt and golden retriever hair, but it throws alot of dust. I especially notice it on my TV & computor screen. I do clean it after every use. This is my 2nd one.

I have had 2 Roombas over a number of years and love them on both my hardwood and tile floors. Just love it and makes a fabulous group for aging members of our family.

Want to try a Scooba so would love to hear from someone who has tried it. Does it sweep and then mop? trying to figure out if I need both or just a Scooba.

Our kitten discovered the light on top while it was charging and has figured out how to turn it on and off. While first a bit hesitant I think she now thinks it is a playmate and has even been found sleeping on top of it.

My grandson tried to ride the Scooba like a surf board (not cool). The dog doesn't pay any attention to it at all. Sometimes I get mesmerized by it and just stand and watch it do it's little dance around the floor. I does a great job, but one still needs to go around the edges of the wall occasionally because it will leave a tell-tale-streak. Cleaning and maintainace in not bad at all, remebering to turn it on is my problem.

Try it you'll like it.

We got a Roomba about 3 years ago. Loved how it went about its business, and when getting low, redocking on its own to recharge. But about a year later, it was acting weird, not redocking or recharging right. We had to get a special download for it, then it went on again as normal, until this year. It is currently not working again, and I miss it!

We refer to it as my "slave", as in, "your slave stuck". Our dog isn't bothered by it until it bumps into her -- she's deaf so it sneeks up on her occasionally.
Best part is demarking the area we want it to concentrate on with the IR units. This is especially nice for under the bed, entry way, and kitchen areas.

I love my roomba, But my only problem is that I can charge it all night and maybe days and the run time is very short within minutes its stops running and has to be recharged. Any suggestions?

Salvannah,
Sounds like you have a bad battery. It could be a bad charger, but the battery is the likely culprit.

Go to http://store.irobot.com or call (800) 727-9077 for parts.

And the roombas do have a one year parts and labor warranty. If you have had your roomba less than a year, the repair or part will probably be free.

The Roomba leaves black marks on my white wall baseboards :(
