Hot Pace
It was 102 degrees the other day at the 2008 HGTV Dream Home construction site in the Florida Keys. And you'd think the local construction crew would be working in shorts.
Nope. Instead, these veterans on builder Juan Dellanos' crew pretty much all wear long pants and long-sleeve white tee shirts. And they all have bandanas hanging down from the back of their hats (hard or soft) to keep the sun off their necks.
HGTV Dream Home House Planner Jack Thomasson says the crews know how many breaks they need to take and how often to drink water: very often. Even with sea breezes coming in from Florida Bay, it's still pretty steamy.
Taking precautions against the heat may make a tight deadline a little tighter. But shaving time on safety is not an option, whether taking a breather or double tethering your guys working on the 12-pitch roof -- made of hot metal, of course.
Sometimes the crew is a little ahead of schedule, sometimes a little behind. But the pace has heated up.
Jack and Construction Supervisor Mike Uhre tell me they're on target for the projected completion. "The deadline for the HGTV Dream Home isn't tighter than normal," says Jack, "but normal is tight."
Staying on schedule is tough for a lot of builders. Tell us: what works for you to keep things moving along.

Thanks,Pam Keating

I am so excited about your choice for this year's Dreamhouse. I have been logging on daily to watch your progress and to see the floor plans.
It is truly my dream to have a home in the Keys.
We would love to retire in the exact spot you are building. Hey, you never know!

Things have certainly heated up on the construction site (102 degrees), plus the heat from the physical work. Juan & Crew are "smart working" with their long sleves, long pants, and hats.

WOW! That's hot...but Juan Dellanos and crew are smart guys and use to working in challenging conditions. Be sure to eat lots of bananas and oranges and wear a covered ice bag on the back of your neck when possible. God Bless You All!!

Good these guys are working with clothes and staying covered to protect themselves....we don't have that kind of heat in Wash., more rain but we had some 90 degrees some time ago....we stay somewhat covered since the sun does burn when we are working on the roof...also doing some remodeling.........keep on working so you get done in time......nice home your building...
Posted by: leon at July 25, 2007 1:14 AM
I feel for those guys. I am sure they are drinking lots of fluids. I hope they stay safe and take care of themselves and make this a happy, healthy build. Their efforts are truly appreciated.

Is Jack Thomasson the person that has been announcing the location on the contests or is it Mike Uhre? Whomever it is, the heat is just getting hotter, he is very nice looking ;) Would he give me a private showing of the site? Even if I didn't win it, which has been the situation thus far, at least it would be fun to see it with whomever that announcer is:)
Every house has been so well done and so beautiful, it would be heaven to live in any of them.
One concern, I have, is with the plethera of storms that come through that area, has that been a factor with the building, to keep it from being trashed and destroyed from the hurricanes, etc.?
Keep up the great job and would love to know who that handsome announcer is.

Thanks for keeping up the work even in the hot heat. Sounds like you are very hard workers. Smart of you guys to keep covered up, you don't want sun burned. I bet you all have great tans already anyway. And do take a break occasionally but drink all the water and gatorades you guys can hold and what a great job you are doing I'm sure. We don't want any of you having a heat stroke. Now do we! Good that the roof is almost in the dry hurry and get it done and then put the windows in so you can put in the air. And get in the cool if you haven't already. I just wish I could see more of your hard work. Make them update the pictures for us please. Take care and God bless you all for working on such a publicized home. I hope you get alot of exposure and work from this adventure. You deserve it!

You guys are doing a fantastic job! I work for a builder in Virginia where we have had some very hot days this year too. So, I feel your pain. Here's to hoping we don't have an active hurricane season this year or anytime soon for that matter. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished project, hopefully up close and personal. Keep up the great work!
Posted by: Mary at July 26, 2007 11:00 PM
I love the new construction pics...well, except the missing one! Juan and his crew are doing a super job and I can't believe it's going up so quickly.
My husband and I get our projects done by just biting the bullet and going full steam ahead. We have found that if we let ourselves be distracted by something else, or take a break from a difficult portion of the project, it's very hard to get back the momentum.
Kudos to Juan and his team for their efforts!
Posted by: cristina at July 27, 2007 5:08 AM
Born on an island and valuing the importance of the culture within the Keys, I cannot wait to see the creative approach this team will bring to this new project.
Truly this will be a dream come true for anyone who admires the beauty of the Keys and all it brings.
You guys are doing a GREAT work so far!
I'm holding my breath, so HURRY!! :-)

The Dream Home fo 08, is simplely beautful form the drawing, and just think you could live in a house like would be heaven on earth. I have always want to vist the Keys and just think being able to live there what on earth could be any better than to win. And for the bed room to be blue , waht could be any better, because blue line has aiways been my favorte color. The house look as it is a well build house, and a strong house. And to able to look out every day to see the ocean and smell the water that would be great.
Posted by: Georgia at July 27, 2007 5:42 PM
I have been watching the construction of your project, I have never lived by water of any sort. I know I would love to live in the Florida except for the hurricanes. Keep up the good work and be safe with high temperatures. Drink plenty of water and periodic breaks. Good Luck on the finished Dream Home!!!

You are all doing a great job even with the hot weather. Jack, you have the knack when it comes to picking the best locations.
How many bedrooms does this dream home have? I keep wishing for a home with 5 to 6 bedrooms, and when that happens, I WISH that will be the one I win.
To all who are involved with Dream Home 2008, take care and keep up the good work.

I visited the Keys for the first time this past June and what an absolutely gorgeous area the Dream Home is being built. Living the tropical lifestyle on the beach is my ultimate dream and this site would be the BEST!!

It would be our retirement dream come true and a deserving win for my wonderful husband who's worked too many years already. Can't wait to register for this one. Juan Dellanos keep ur men safe and continue to do a great job. Take care.

I have lived in Key West for nearly 30 years teaching school while my husband sells real estate in town, we have visited many places- warm & cold. I have to say the temperature rarely rises above 90 but with the humidity it can feel like a 102. With the ocean breezes (although warm) it helps tremendously to moderate the temperature. I have been here for every hurricane although I take them serious I do not get paralyzed with fear by them. I think the dream home is being built in a beautiful, one of a kind area of the country- bravo for picking one of my favorites places- the Florida Keys.

I was just wondering...Is Juan single? I mean Jack is cute, but a man that can run a construction crew to build those homes must be a very brilliant person... :)

Thanks, keep up the good work, I know it's very hot down there. Obviously you have some real pros doing a great job.

I can't wait to see the floor plan. I love the tower off the master suite and the porch. I did notice that the third floor was the only floor built with wood and not cement. Does that mean during a hurricane the master suite will be a goner?

Thanks again for the opportunity to win such a dream prize.

All of the HGTV Dream Homes are amazing and beautiful, and I enter every year! However, the location for the 2008 house would really be a dream come true for my family. We are passionate about the ocean, the beach, and the wildlife of Florida and the Keys. How amazing to awaken to the sun rising over the Atlantic, the cries of seagulls, and the smell of salt in the air.
Posted by: e at August 13, 2007 6:05 PM
I love the location!! The house looks beautiful too. Take it easy in this heat, guys! It's better to be late and alive than burn up if you're not on time.
We love the ocean and beaches and the tropical scene's. My two son's live in Florida and they would love for us to move there.
Can't wait to enter for this "dream home".

I am so excited about the home being built in Florida. Much sickness in my life; I cannot take the cold of the northern states that you have built in, but sonny Florida would be a gift from God!

The house looks great already, and congrats to Juan and his crew for being out there finishing it in the Florida heat.
Being a hurricane Andrew victim, I would like to know why the 3rd floor has been built with wood and the house was not built on concrete stilts to avoid flooding damage?

Looks like a great project. Having worked in construction in FL for years, your pics tell the tale of concrete reinforcement using block (masonry) construction. Would loved to have seen it built with ICFs (insulating concrete forms). Maybe the next house! Please focus on your storm resistant techniques, materials and hopefully energy efficiency applications. We all want to know more!! Can't wait to see it on my next trip to the Keys!

Everyone at HGTV must be very proud of their accomplishments. The homes are so finely built and much thought about the enviroment and the surrounding landscapes have played a big roll in each homes property. You have obviously picked the right people behind and in front of the camera to present a great show, and the finished project is always a "dream" to see. As always, I look forward to the unveiling.
