Controlled Chaos

Contractors and builders are all familiar with the last moments of a big project. But for the 2008 HGTV Dream Home in Islamorada, Fla., there was a little more chaos, requiring a little more control.

Builder Juan Dellanos admits that working on a home built to be televised made him nervous.

* The pavers are going down.
* The palm trees are going up, the green fronds nicely accenting the blue and white house with yellow trim.
* All the construction crews are done, and their equipment has been moved off site.
* The crews left the home spotless, and the furniture is moving in ('Gorgeous furniture that's making our work look even better!' says Juan).

Project manager Mike Uhre juggled many things and kept the whole project on schedule by managing materials, subs, paperwork, and generally looking out for the interests of the eventual owner -- whoever that turns out to be.

HGTV Dream Home House Planner Jack Thomasson and Interior Designer Linda Woodrum made pivotal decisions on the final aspects of the home and moved the project forward from the start.

The chaos has been controlled, and the beautiful HGTV Dream Home 2008 has been built, leaving Juan feeling "a little shocked" that this house came off without a schedule-busting hitch.

We hired a GC (who was a friend of my husband's) to renovate our master bathroom. Huge mistake. We waited almost two months after the scheduled start date only to be told he would "work us in between other jobs". We offered to do the demolition to speed up the process and he agreed that would help. So we did. We gutted the entire bathroom, pulling out the toilet, shower, tub, counters, cabinets, sinks. We tore down all the wallboard, ceiling (it was a drop ceiling) and pulled up the old ceramic tile. We completely cleaned everything out and left a blank slate for the GC to work with. To our surprise he never returned our phone calls and never did the job he was hired for. Our "project" bathroom took us 6 months to complete ourselves and I have to say we did a beautiful job.

I love the house and the site but I am wondering if there has been any consideration for Hurricane Shutters?

The house looks wonderful. Beautiful. There is no doubt of its beauty. But where is the front of the house? How does it look from the front? What is the 1st thing that your friends see when you show-off the house for the 1st time. What is the 1st thing that u see when you are driving up? How close is the dock to the house when it is built. What protection does it have against huracanes?

That yukon looks great but in todays date just about everyone has a car or 2 in there garage. But with all that beautiful water out there & all that fishing going on there a little boat (Even a rowboat) would not be so bad. The connection to that big beautiful ocean out there calling out "My name". I sure wish I was your big winner this year. Keep building those beautiful houses, I'll continue trying to dream of my family & me living in it. Keep us (all of America) dreaming about it. You guys @ Hgtv can make the most beautiful dreams I just wish that I was to wake up in it. Thanks for the dream.

Dreaming in Orlando. :-)

I would like to know if the builder has a date for the compleation of the development? Looking at his web site it would seem that he has a lot to do. And yes what about Hurricane Shutters? Having lived in Florida they do come in handy. And what about screened in pourches? There are bugs in Florida. I do love the House!
