IBS 2009: Just Two More Months

The International Builders Show comes to Las Vegas on January 20, 2009, and the folks at HGTVPro.com are getting everything ready. This year, though, we'd like to try something a little different.

In previous years, we've walked the show floor, getting photos, videos, and information from the various exhibitors that caught our attention. But even as big as the show can be, we know that not everyone will be able to attend.

That's where you come in.

We'd like you to help us decide what to cover at the 2009 IBS. Let us know the companies and products you'd like to learn more about. Tell us which business ideas and strategies would help you the most.

We've made it easy --- just post a comment on this blog, telling us what you'd like to see from the show. When we receive your requests, we'll add them to our list and do our best to get the information for you.

Thanks!

I'm kind of a gadget nut and like seeing the next new inventions. Will there be any of those there?

Posted by: Frank V. at December 8, 2008 10:53 AM

Please continue to show new, improved products that keep your property in good working order, and compare them with other new and current products.

Several years ago, installed Marmoleum (special design) flooring in the kitchen. Due to certain damages, I'm considering something more durable and easy to keep clean.

Enjoy your resource website.

I would like to see the show run longer than 1 hour, and no commericals

Posted by: Cathy Brohan at December 9, 2008 2:53 PM

I'd like to see more on pricing of new items vs cost of existing tools or materials. Also want to see the latest green materials & tools, have you compare their costs to existing items & figure payback period if the manufacturer claims energy or other cost savings. Lots of these green items will never make economic sense to use but I'd use ones that save money quickly.

Posted by: Dennis W. at December 9, 2008 3:00 PM

I'd like to see any new roofing products. Especially one for a flat roof. Also, love my power tools, any new products would be nice to see.

Posted by: James at December 9, 2008 3:48 PM

I would like to know...who are the companies that carry recycled glass countertops & who are the distributors for Canada? This info would be truly appreciated..Thank You!

Posted by: Joyce Deslaunais at December 9, 2008 5:06 PM

I DO JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING BUT KITCHEN AND BATH PRODUCTS ALSO PAVERS AND DECK MATERIAL ALSO FLOOR AND WALL TILE {GLASS AND PROCILIN} AND I DO AGREE ABOUT A TWO HOUR SHOW W/NO COMMERICALS

I live in a 28 year old brick ranch style home and i want to begin updating, AC, new windows, etc., related to updating it "Green Wise" systems and appearance. So I would like to know what the areas of such "Green" updating is good to do and what is available in new technology for such type renovations. I really appreciate your website. Thanks

Posted by: Wassie Griffin at December 9, 2008 8:10 PM

I would like to see a more "user friendly" crown molding system than MDF. This stuff is horrible!

Posted by: Clark Schnell at December 9, 2008 9:23 PM

I'd love to see more green cabinetry choices as well as green countertops and work surfaces.

Posted by: Robin at December 9, 2008 11:32 PM

I would like to see tools for lifting and installing water heaters. I saw a water heater installation tool once several years ago at the Plumbing and Heating Contractors Convention in San Diego, but haven't seen it (or anything like it) since. It was motorized and could lift a water heater up to a platform and even climb stairs with it. Hopefully there will be something like it at the show.

Posted by: Boyd West at December 10, 2008 12:49 AM

I would like to see on solar generators and even how I can purchase the items on how to build one myself. Also what is new in radient heating in floors, solar roof shingles, products made from recycled materials, and green products for the garden.
Wish I could go to the convention.
Thanks for being my eyes.

Posted by: Mickie at December 10, 2008 6:34 AM

I feel like the one person---longer than an hour & even which stores we can find these. I've watched all the other shows but when it comes to finding these new items locally, it's almost impossible so the newest gadgets, plus the store & price, no commercials. Is that too much to ask? Thanks.

Posted by: Carol at December 10, 2008 9:15 AM

I would like to see tools and products that are wheel chair,Little People(midgets) for lack of a better word no disrespect to them and people that are over 6 feet tall friendly.

P.S Showers, Bath Tubs, Toilets, fancy wheel chair ramps, automatic doors that swings back at the bathroom sinks when the wheelchair aproches so that the wheelchair bound person can get closer to the sink to brush teeth and whatever else

Posted by: Annie Cole at December 10, 2008 9:16 AM

I would like to see kitchen faucets that can be turned on by a foot pedal like in the surgery scrub section of hospitals.

Posted by: Jeanette Persons at December 10, 2008 9:16 AM

You should talk about ALTERNATIVE Housing...that is GEODESIC CEMENT DOME HOMES!!
Save on energy, insurance, no roof replacement,
few interior walls, cheaper to build.
In fact, if the geniuses in our society had any brains, they'd build schools, police stations,
all public bldgs. with taxpayer/bond money as
Geodesic, Cement Domes. Check out American Ingenuity in Florida, a company with a unique, dome design. Try being a RADICAL CAPITALIST!!

Posted by: Peter Waldman at December 10, 2008 9:41 AM

I would love to see more information regarding the expansion into reclaimed resources and how they are being implemented into the home. In particular, the kitchen and bath areas are of particular interest.

Thank you!

Posted by: Tonia at December 10, 2008 10:22 AM

I would like to see green products for remodleing my home.

Posted by: James Watson at December 10, 2008 12:38 PM

longer show would be great two or three hours, keep the commericals if it gits us a longer show.

Posted by: terry at December 10, 2008 12:44 PM

I would like to see the latest comapnies for Solar and Wind alternatives and what they have to offer. I would also be interested in see other new green options for the housing market.

Posted by: Cindy at December 10, 2008 1:31 PM

The shows should be longer than a hour. Part 1 and part 2 would be nice. Indoor then outdoor.

Greenhouses that can put on small properties.

Alternative heating on a home.

Many people are not selling their home, so more improvements but not high end. More middle class.

Shop the playing around lke you has on some shows.

I like the idea of having more information for the people with disabilities. Not all of us are in wheelchairs.
Thank you

I realize this comment may "date me" but frankly it jumbles the mind when the camera is bouncing all over the place, can't they show something withoug all the jiggling around? (Yes I am a senior citizen) The mind and the eye have a hard time absorbing it all that way. A two hour show would be GREAT as I love seeing all the newest products, mostly the green ones. Finally, it would be interesting if you would take one lucky viewer with you to the show to get opinions from "man on the street" so to speak. Thanks.
Love your programs and watch whenever I can grab the remote (HAHA)

Posted by: Bev at December 10, 2008 5:25 PM

It would be great to see products that average consumers (like police officers and health care worker families) could afford in homes worth between $150,000 and $350,000. I enjoy the actual building products so it'd be great to see the energy, cost, and speed of construction comparisons between ICF, SIPS built with wood vs with steel, or stick built with expanding foam insulation. More info on geothermal and solar power and how to use these power systems in tandem. I also love kitchen and bath products. Water filtration products for whole house, under the sink, and refrigerators would be helpful. Maybe compare the cost/health comparisons between water jet tubs vs air jet tubs. Having links to actual companies where the average consumers can get green/sustainable certified cabinets/counters/floors. Hope I'm not asking for too much ;o)

Posted by: Tara W at December 10, 2008 11:12 PM

Please show Green Products available and coming up and have the show run for at least one hour.

Posted by: Nelson Silva at December 11, 2008 12:15 PM

heard about the eden pure quartz infrared portable heater. sounds great for reducing heating costs, if one is there can yo get more info please? thanks!

Posted by: anonymous at December 11, 2008 12:21 PM

FYI, the eden pure is a heater. It is reasonably attractive. It's cool to the touch. And it's really expensive. It costs as much (or more) to run as any other space heater. So if you're looking for furniture that heats a room, and you don't mind paying a whole lot of money, go for it. But if you're looking to save money on your heating bill, don't bother.

At least that's what the reviews say (just Google the term "eden pure review").

As for the Builders Show, I do think it'd be nice if we could learn about alternative heating technologies (pellet stoves, corn stoves, etc.). My heating costs are going through the roof this year.

Posted by: Bradley at December 11, 2008 1:33 PM

I'd like to see innovation in how Building Information Modeling (BIM) design interelates to the actual building process. The technology is there to go further in helping the building team build faster and better while adding value to the structure itself. Blueprints need a BIG over-hall in our view.

Think about it how much sence this makes...I have a few suggestions to add to the topic if anyone cares.

Posted by: Mike at December 12, 2008 7:10 AM

I'd like to see new green and energy products including Wind and Solar. Also products for Universal Design / Aging in Place.

Posted by: Michael Theunissen at December 12, 2008 7:35 AM

I would love to see someone make a high quality tile cement that will eliminate (mostly) tile breaking so easily. And forget backerboard.

Posted by: carlene at December 12, 2008 9:02 PM

I would like to know what is the new adhesive that you can install wall tiles (marble, slate, ceramic) with that does not have to be held in place. It was only briefly shown on one show.

I would like to know discount pricing for granite, stone, stainless steel counter-tops in the Baltimore area.

Posted by: Mike at December 14, 2008 8:41 AM

Please show us innovative technologies & renewable energy products!

Anything solar, wind, kinetic, would be awesome.
With technology advances and improvements, I don't know of any other way to get new information on developments of these products.

Very interested in recycled goods. We need to be in the know where the demand is on materials so we don't end up tossing something into a landfill that could be reused, re-purposed or reduced...

Not going to the show so please give us an insiders view!

Posted by: Jayce Dockins at December 15, 2008 8:43 AM

I would like to see me being able to be there
Id be a good represenitive for anyone looking for an average person to represent their products
or just to look at, examine and discuss their products being useful and user friendly

Posted by: mike at December 15, 2008 5:17 PM

We definitely need a 2 hour show, no commercials.
I always get upset when the one hour is up. Too much to see & know about & I take notes. This is one of the best shows you guys have, along with Cool Tools.

Posted by: Carol Garrett at December 15, 2008 10:19 PM

1. Anything for the "Passive House" concept.

2. New materials for closed cell foam that a non-foam contractor can install - particularly when foaming under the roof sheathing for making a completely insulated attic (no ventilation, as now authorized by the IBC).

3. Anything that helps resolve whether it is recommended to use "open cell" or "closed cell" in the application above.

4. Anything for solar applications that uses the new "thin film" technology.

Thanks.

Posted by: Allen Grayson at January 13, 2009 8:50 PM

Anything to do with Wine Cellars since I'm in the middle of that project right now and will be for the next several months.

Posted by: Bob at January 13, 2009 10:11 PM

Newest ways to go green, including most economical ways. And kitchen appliance finishes - what's going to be next after stainless?

Posted by: sue at January 13, 2009 10:30 PM

I live near New Orleans. I want to know what possibilities there are for tornado/hurricane resistant housing, as well as flood avoidant designs. There are literally millions of viewers who need this kind of information. How much will tree, tornado, hurricane wind resistant houses cost? What is the best shape? best materials, etc.

Posted by: Sandra Loucks at January 13, 2009 11:06 PM

wheelchair friendly bathrooms and other products for the home.....

Posted by: Susan at January 14, 2009 12:02 AM

I'm an older lady who loves tools & I need some tools that would make it easier for older single ladies to use around their homes. There are a lot of us & we can't afford to be hiring people to do things so please find some tools that make it easier for us to accomplish some things in our own homes, without the help of a professional.

Posted by: Carol Garrett at January 14, 2009 7:58 AM

I totally agree with the "green" comments.
Today's consumers (and our clients) are very concerned with their footprints.

Posted by: Tim at January 14, 2009 8:40 AM

My business associates and I are going to be attending the show and sharing some of our latest successes. Our revolutionary product sample process has manny benefits for eveyy member of the building industry. We will be meeting with a number of building materials manufactures who are looking for ways to outperform the market, while delivering more value to their channel partners and to their sales process. Stay informed by joining our LinkedIn IBS Group before the show.

Interested in learning how to best install lights and ceiling fans in a suspended drop ceiling. Also, would like information on solar water heating syatems, and solar grid and non-grid systems.

Posted by: Kevin at January 14, 2009 11:09 AM

Looking for easy adaptable ways to integrate solar power into a 45 year old house. Also, kitchen and bath hardware and appliances, flooring options, energy saving devices that truly work.
Plus, a longer show as others have indicated would be great. The show is such eye candy for the home improver and builder.

Posted by: Ann Stevenson at January 14, 2009 11:23 AM

I would like to see more types of metal roofing, especially those that replicate shake or tile with stone coated surfaces to deaden sound and reflect heat.

Posted by: Phil at January 14, 2009 5:19 PM

There are soooo many good suggestions. A longer show with more time spent on new products and where we can purchase them would be good. Divide the show into parts - indoor, outdoor, building and new products.
