Greening Trend

We report all the time here at HGTVPro.com that green is a growing trend and there are indicators that green will one day -- sooner than anybody probably thought a decade ago -- become a new status quo.

Someday.

I'm behind that.

You can call me a pinko tree-hugger if you want, but efficiency beats waste every trip of the train. And prices for green products are coming down as manufacturers sense demand and factories come on-line.

But that's the 30,000-foot view delivering a nationwide perspective. It doesn't get us behind the wheel of your truck nor our boots in the mud of your sites.

What's the hue of your day-to-day? Do sticks and batts still gain the day? Does your work require -- or benefit from -- greener products and techniques? Are you weaving in and upgrading greener products as you go? Have you made a wholesale change? Let me know.

Every person on the planet needs to wake up and smell the roses - while we still have some. I don't care why the polar ice is melting, or why the storms are worse, or if it's true, we'll be out of Natural gas in 5 years and Oil in twenty. We need to stop what ever we are doing. Turn around and go back to simpler times and rethink what living on this Earth is about. Solar and wind just make sense. If you live in an area that allows bamboo houses - build them. Earth roofs, go for it. Just quit with the waste and overcharging to cover up for it (CYA.).

We have been building timber frames wrapped in insulated panels for over ten years now. Since we always promoted the energy efficiency of our homes, we were on the green boat early. In an effort to encourage homeowners to build green, we are promoting more sustainable products, more energy efficient appliances, and more responsible building practices as we discuss their projects. Educating builders has been harder than educating consumers. We see more interest overall in green building, but bringing contractors onboard is a tough move and not for the faint of heart. The "now" is tough to overcome with the "long term". Strong energy codes and insistent clients will help to turn the tide.

After 6 months of letting our lumber scraps pile up we were shocked at the waste! We are now cutting that waste in half by carefully planning the cuts on our boards. We also use Trex and Ondura (both recycled products) on many of our playgrounds. We have also started to carry recycled rubber mulch. I personally witness an incredible amount of waste in the construction business. As a female I don't get much response from the guys when I make suggestions on how we could be more green in this business. It is frustrating.

You cannot ignor the importance of saving resourses. Having explored the possiblities of the near future, it is very bleak. You cannot keep expansion of building every square inch and of the earth. Fossil fuel pollution of the air we breathe is intorable and at dangerous levels. The rich would have you to believe it is not so. To pollute at higher levels in the face of thier own destruction. Our leaders igor the facts that today we need solar and wind power well insulated homes power coservation in all devices that use electricity and that over population is not an option. The one thing that would help more than any get the crooks out of office.Hang them from a tree or harness all that hot air and warm our homes in winter.
