Wii Would Like to ... Sell Your House!

Okay, this is way off my usual topic, but I've successfully rationalized a reason for writing about it anyway. I'll get into that later, but I want to get this posted while our resident home-electronics guru Bob Gatton is at the CEDIA convention in Denver. After all, I'm treading on his territory.

Last week I had the chance to play with a Nintendo Wii system for the first time. Now mind you, I am not anyone's idea of a serious gamer. The most extreme game I play is Free Cell. I know, I know. I'm completely out of touch with the 21st century -- not to mention the kids in my life.

However, the Wii may have changed that. I LOVED it! It won't be too long before I've rationalized a good reason for buying one for our empty-nester home. (I am a master rationalizer.) The games we played are fun, not too alien (albeit it's been a long time since I've set foot on a real tennis court) and provide plenty of opportunity for interaction among the players.

That's one of the best parts, I think. Computer games can be quite social (you should see -- or hear -- my daughter and her husband play Tetris), but for the most part, you don't get the same cries of delight or defeat that the Wii inspires. It reminded me of playing board games (does anyone do that anymore?) because everyone was fully involved in the game and the other players -- not just a computer. It could make quality family time easy again.

Okay, here's the rationalization (the first one): The Wii is very popular. Buying new houses is not -- at least right now. With builders coming up with various incentives, such as plasma TVs or granite countertops, to help sell houses, I think a free Wii system would be a terrific bonus. It's a lot cheaper than a plasma TV -- or, for relatively little additional money, you can add a Wii to a TV incentive.

You could set up a Wii in your model home or at an open house; it'd keep the kids busy while the parents can take their time checking out the home. And you can tell them that if they buy the house, they get the Wii, too. (Think of the extra pressure from the kids to get Mom and Dad to close the sale!)

Have any of you had good luck with incentive "gifts" such as this? How do you choose them? Do you have any stories about how well they've worked -- or haven't worked? Let me hear about them -- soon. Once I get my Wii, there's no telling when I'll come up for air.

Yeah, the wii is definitely something that is fun for the whole family. You should get it.

Quit treading on my turf! LOL

What a great idea for builder incentives Marjie. I think you've stumbled on something here....

LOL but insanely fun. if you are playing.. or just watching. can't understand how you "feel" the game in the stick you use.. it is nuts. and hey. for those that need upper body movement. it can be played sitting down too.. but you will SWEAT!! when you get into it!~. .BUY it .. even if you don't wanna sell your home.. worth it for the full family!!!

This is a great idea. Now people can achieve both american dreams...owning a Wii and a home.

Posted by: GameJobHunter at September 11, 2007 9:16 PM

The Wii is a very unique thing, indeed. But I doubt it'll be the thing to close the deal, sweeten it maybe, but you'll need more then a Wii. (And what about a game and a second game cont.)

I wouldn't advertise just that though, give the choice of a free wii or a free something else.

This is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. I'd take the hint - that the agent is desperate - and make a low offer if I liked the place.

Consequently, I would never trust another word passing through that agent's lips.

We could any incentives to sell our house in Daytona Beach, Fl. We have had this house for 3 three years and need to sell it, but are not having any luck. Can you help?

Posted by: Jane Crenshaw at September 11, 2007 10:28 PM

Awful idea. If any realtor or homeowner pulled this gimmicky crap on me, I would walk out immediately and find another house to look at. How stupid do you have to seriously consider this.

"Have any of you had good luck with incentive "gifts" such as this? "

When we sold our house a year ago, the buyers requested that we leave them our fridge and microwave. Microwave was a 3 year old $30 open box display, and the fridge... had seen better years (and a lot less rust). But they refused to buy the house if those two weren't left.

Posted by: john at September 11, 2007 11:24 PM

Great way to bring them in.

Posted by: Steve at September 12, 2007 1:08 AM

The Wii is fun for a day or two, but then gets insanely boring. Board Games are timeless because their is actually some skill based competition.

Posted by: Aaron at September 12, 2007 1:35 AM

Good idea. Despite hardcore gamers could hate Wii, posts like that tell the truth about what people really think Wii is. A good machine for fun.

Posted by: Alex at September 12, 2007 3:16 AM

I don't know, buying a house is a major decision and not something that a free Wii is really going to attract me to a house. While it's a smart idea from a selling perspective, I think it's sorta stupid that they are treating potential home buyers like children, who will readily buy a box of cereal just because they get a free widget or toy in the box.

We were fortunate to get one right away. The best thing about it is that my mother used to take the kids bowling, now she just comes over to bowl on the Wii. Cheaper and enjoyable for the whole family, plus makes Nintendo Gamecube obsolete since you can use those games with the Wii and the controllers as well. Better than Xbox or Playstation.

Posted by: Tracy at September 12, 2007 7:10 AM

You're probably better off getting a 360. There's no games for wii and there's loads of great ones coming out on 360. (I have both a Wii and 360 and i rarely play the wii anymore)

Posted by: loadsa at September 12, 2007 7:47 AM

What a fantastic idea! Wii to think out of the box. This is the perfect justification for a Wii purchase. Thanks Marjie.

Posted by: Heather Ostrom at September 12, 2007 9:05 AM

I think a free TV with a Wii would definetly give an advantage with a buyer deciding between to similiar homes. If someone could see their family having fun in the house, they could easily picture themselves living there. I'm not sure a Wii by itself would do it.

Posted by: Mark at September 12, 2007 10:09 AM

The hard part is getting the word out that you have a house for sale, we have one for sale for a year and it is in MLS I tried the Miami paper no calls, the paper's add are disorganized. Where should I advertise? The price is already way below market.

Well, I can sell you a nice house in South Jersey. The house is 8 miles from the beach, comes fully furnished and I can throw in the Wii.
As much as we love the Wii, I'd throw it in.

Posted by: Martha at September 12, 2007 11:31 AM

Problem is with using kids. they already have Nintendo, playstation and 100 or so games. better to throw in a cheaper home theatre system I think.

Posted by: Bill at September 12, 2007 11:35 AM

I think some people are missing the point here. The Wii (or whatever) isn't something that's there to make the sale. It's there to make you REMEMBER THE HOUSE!

I know that when I was in the market for a new house, the one I kept thinking back to was the one that came with a built-in entertainment center. It was a unique aspect of the house that none of the other houses had. Now that I've got kids, I can only imagine the pressure they'd be putting on me after a few weeks of house hunting if they'd had fun playing video games in one of the homes.

This is a great idea for getting a house to stand apart from the competition, and if it looks like the market is running a little slow when it comes time to sell my current home, you'd better believe I'll be considering such a tactic myself.

find out what they actually need and give them that

Can you hgtv fix my hosue so I can sell it. the market is so bad and requires you have a perfect house in order to sell it and get a decent price for it.

Posted by: bernard craig at September 13, 2007 12:47 AM

I think that having a WII is so awesome to have, especially for us older folks that can't go to bowling. This would be the perfect game for us, it is the best thing that came, but never can tell, maybe there might be a different game in the near future. But getting a house with a game like this is the best thing you can ask for, as long as you get to it first, before your grandkids get to it. So, yes I would be as happy as kid getting something for me as a bonus for buying myself a house.

Posted by: Lesley at September 13, 2007 1:35 AM

Well, that's special! Or you could try cleaning out all your clutter, thinning out your closets and storage spaces, a fresh coat of paint, and some lush flowers out front! Of course , some of you may need to do more. Since most of you are watch HGTV, then pay attention to "how to" get your home sold and get busy.

Wow, amazing how all but one person missed the entire point of this article! In today's market you have to make your open house a presence in the neighborhood. How many people will remember a house with bonus incentives to buy? Quite a few I assure you, and sure a video game isn't huge, but you remember how much fun you had there, how inviting it was to walk in and see kids or parents gathered around laughing and playing. I think the point was more not that the WII itself would sell the house but the atmosphere that a WII can bring would help that house stand apart as a home.

Posted by: Leslie at September 15, 2007 2:33 PM

While that may be a good idea. The Wii is still not currently an easily obtainable object. Purchasing the Wii, if you can find it, and 3 remotes costs about $400. I think I would just keep my Wii to myself.

Posted by: Christal at September 18, 2007 4:09 PM

I love it! I've got a Wii and play it with my boys all the time. While it might not be a deciding factor for buying a house, it couldn't hurt the overall perception of a home. It looks like I'm not the only one that thinks this could help. Check out what the folks at Wired have said about your idea - http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/09/hgtv-suggests-u.html.
